Creating Health Plus

A Training Day for the Cooks and Volunteers that work in homeless Drop-ins & Shelters George Brown Centre for Hospitality and Culinary Arts 300 Adelaide Street, Toronto Wednesday October 26, 2011 9 a.m. – 3 p.m. Daily Bread Food Bank is working in partnership with George Brown College and the City of Toronto to create a free day-long cooking workshop for 100 cooks and kitchen volunteers from homeless drop-in centres and shelters across the city. Many of the people who attend this training are service users who help to prepare meals in the homeless drop-ins and shelters. This is the 10th time this hands-on event has been held and there will be cake! This workshop helps to promote healthy meals in the drop-ins where thousands of homeless and marginally housed people eat every day. Drop-ins often rely on donations for the food they cook, making it very difficult to plan nutritious meals in advance. This training day is a chance for the volunteers, cooks and kitchen helpers to cook in small groups with George Brown Chefs and Chef Apprentices in the Centre for Hospitality and Culinary Arts state-of-the-art kitchens. The participants learn how to prepare recipes that they can take back and use in their agencies. At the end of the day, participants sit together and eat what they have cooked. Whatever is left at the end of the day is sent to one of the participating drop-ins.
