Make sure your goals sync with your values

Syndicated from: Canadian Youth Business Foundation

Hamish Knox, Sandler Training, Calgary, AB, CYBF Young Entrepreneur The two most common questions my clients ask about goal-setting are, “What kind of goals?” and “How do I know which goal to tackle first?” My clients learn to set long-term (more than two years), and short-term (less than two years), goals in the following seven areas of their life: Mind Body Spirit Company/Career Financial Social Personal/Family To figure out where to start, rank both your long-term and short-term goals on a scale of 1-7 (pretending you only set one goal for each category). Your rankings will indicate your values and tell you if your goals and values sync. For example, if you want to do more volunteering, but your goal to “increase volunteering” is ranked fifth, you’ll probably end up frustrated with yourself when you don’t hit your goal. If you don’t like your rankings, you may need to adjust your goals. After committing to your goals, set a daily/weekly action plan for each of your goals then celebrate your successes. To learn more about action plans, check out my article Summertime is sales time.

Great advice. You may want to check out GoalsOnTrack, a very nicely built web app designed for tracking goals, habits, and todo lists, and supports time tracking too. It’s clear, focused, easy to navigate, and most of all, really works!
