STWM Runner’s Corner: Ester Scott

This year’s Scotiabank Toronto Waterfront Marathon will be held on Sunday, October 14. Over the next few weeks, we’ll be encouraging you to sign up to run and inspiring those who have already signed up with tips from runners who have done it before. Last year, Ester Scott ran the Scotiabank Toronto Waterfront Marathon with a goal of trying to break two hours in the half marathon. She decided to run it for two reasons: training for a goal of running the New York Marathon a month later, and more importantly, raising money for Daily Bread Food Bank as a participant in the charity run. “When I enrolled in the Scotia run, I went through the long list of charities,” said Ester.  “I chose Daily Bread Food Bank because I believe they provide a necessary benefit.  Everyone needs food.  It is that simple.” To help fundraise for her run, she sent emails to all her friends and neighbours. Surprising even herself, Ester helped raise over $3,000 for Daily Bread last year. As part of signing up to race with Daily Bread, Ester was inspired even more by picking up her race package at Daily Bread’s warehouse, and seeing firsthand the kind of work and dedication that goes in to providing almost 66,000 food hampers a month to families and individuals all across Toronto. To prepare for her half marathon run, Ester followed the Running Room training program.  It wasn’t easy, and required a lot of preparation work for a race that covers just over 21 kilometres. “I ran one fast 5k and at least two 10k’s per week.  Every Sunday I did a long run.  All over Canada, the Running Room stores have open runs on Sundays, and they increase their mileage each week.  I ran twice with them for the runs that were over 28 kilometers.  This enabled me to meet other runners…super long runs can get lonely on your own!” said Ester.  “I live in Thornhill and the biggest run I did was to and from Stouffville (over 34 kilometres), which was my longest run before the marathon.  I did that one on my own.”  After training so intensively, Ester knew she was ready for the challenge of running in the marathon. She finished her half marathon in two hours and 21 seconds, and raised enough money to provide food hampers to 120 people struggling with hunger.
