The Business of Being Socially-Minded

Social entrepreneurs use their business ventures to create value from a financial, environmental and community perspective. Explore common strategies and tactics for developing and managing a socially-minded venture and learn how to measure its performance. CYBF entrepreneur, Derek Major, will be in attendance to share his story of how he incorporated socially-minded practices into his business to positively impact the Calgary community. Derek Major is the CEO and Partner at Eligeo Information Technology in Calgary, AB where his primary duties include business development and growth of the small technology firm. Previously, Derek has held several senior I.T. roles with organizations such as TELUS, Shaw Communications, ATB Financial and Jim Pattison Group. As part of his role at Eligeo he is also the lead for the organizations Eligeo C.A.R.E. (Communities Are Really Everything) program which dedicates resources towards philanthropic efforts including the company’s annual ball hockey tournament. In 2009, Derek was a runner up for the Calgary Chamber of Commerce’s Emerging Entrepreneur of the Year Award and in 2010 his team was presented with an award for Leaders in Employee Volunteering by Volunteer Calgary. Derek has been featured in several technology magazines and has most recently been a speaker at the 2011 Microsoft Worldwide Partner conference in Los Angeles with a focus on emerging technologies for business.
